Grant Thornton International was formed in 1980 by the U.S. and UK audit firms of Alexander Grant and Thornton Baker to serve as the umbrella organization. Today, Grant Thornton International is one of the world's leading organizations of independently owned and managed accounting and consulting firms. Each member and correspondent firm within Grant Thornton International is a separate national firm and there is no common ownership among the firms.
Together, the member firms of Grant Thornton International in over 109 countries and 490 offices with approximately 29.000 employees support international enterprises in building and expanding their global business activities. With a growth rate of 14% from 2007 to 2008 and fee revenue totaling US$ 4 billion in 2008, the organization numbers among the leading networks worldwide.
Grant Thornton International takes an active role in international professional development such as International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Partners of Grant Thornton firms are members of national and international standard setting boards and advisory groups such as IAASB, IASB/FASB International Working Group, SEC Regulations Committee, FASB Emerging Issues Taskforce and the Transnational Auditors Committee. GTI is one of the six founding members of the Forum of Firms of IFAC.
All members of Grant Thornton International are required to comply with the IFAC Code of Ethics and International Standards on Auditing (ISAs) to the extent not prohibited by national regulations. In addition Grant Thornton International establishes binding quality and ethical standards for its members and facilitates internationally reliable service quality through trainings and knowledge exchange.
Compliance with these quality standards is monitored by experienced peers from other member firms of Grant Thornton International as part of the periodic quality reviews under the GTAR program.
High quality in international group audits can only be achieved, when the group auditor and the auditors of subsidiaries in the various countries are subjected to the same reliable quality standards, when the independence of the network is safeguarded and when a uniform and state-of-the-art audit approach is applied worldwide.
GTI HorizonTM is the uniform global audit methodology of Grant Thornton International. This risk-based audit approach is based on International Standards on Auditing and continuously updated to reflect the latest professional development and ISA. The efficient and appropriate application of this audit approach is supported by the software tools Grant Thornton Explorer™ and Grant Thornton auditCARE™ or beginning 2009 Grant Thornton Voyager™, respectively.
